Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale has taken Japan by the storm. The film opened in around 150 theatres across Japan on Saturday, and sold a whopping 308,376 tickets for an amount of 425,762,760 yen (around US$3.76 million). The film also made sure that it topped the Japanese Box Office last weekend. After Makoto Shinkai’s ‘Your Name’, it became the first anime film to rank #1 in weekend attendance, and weekend box office receipt totals as well.
The per-screen average for Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale was 2.82 million yen. According to sources, the final box office tally of this movie could eventually surpass a staggering 2.5 billion yen.
The audience for the movie included middle school and high school students and couples, as well as anime fans in their late 30s and 40s as well.
