From earning $289 mil worldwide and overtaking Titanic at the Japenese box office to winning an Academy award and The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival who would’ve expected the 2001 Studio Ghibli production “Spirited Away” to be one of the greatest anime movies there is. It tells us the story of a 10 year old girl, Chihiro Ogino whose parents are moving her to the countryside away from her friends (and thus the whiny behaviour at the beginning). But when her father takes a wrong turn and the family gets lost in the woods, Chihiro finds herself in an extraordinary world and on a quest to protect what she loves most-family & friends. But is this story that simple,or there is more to it than meets the eye.
Hayao Miyazaki’s movies are known to be full of various themes and metaphors.
The transition to adulthood is one of the main themes of this movie. It is pretty evident from Chihiro’s transformation from a whiny little girl to a mature one as she does all that is possible to her (including washing up dirty tubs) to save her family.
